Bologna...it was amazing!

Looking back at a wonderful weekend in Bologna! Saturday morning November 25th I traveled to Italy to attend the opening of the 11th edition of the “Little Treasures” exhibition. Every artist that was invited by Trevisan Art International created four mini artworks of the same size (20 x 20cm) for this event. Instead of 40 artists, there were about 100 artists from all over the world participating in this exhibition.

I was feeling so excited going to the opening! Finally seeing all the artwork in person and meeting other artists. Once we were settled in our cozy and homey hotel, it was time to dress up and go for a walk to Galleria di Marche where the exhibition would take place.

The first person I met when arriving at the Galleria was Paola Trevisan. Organizing the whole event and also keeping in touch with all the artists I think she did an awesome job!
She opened the exhibition with a speech. Surrounded by so much beautiful work she explained that all the artworks were put together in an intentional way. Some matching with colors, others matching in style. But thoughtful organized. And not to forget the beautiful catalogue: Every artist with art description and an art piece covering two pages. She explained how the exhibition came together, with some anecdotes of several organization challenges and thanking her colleagues and all the participating artists.
She closed her speech by announcing that an independent jury judged all the artwork and the 10 best artworks would receive an award. When they announced the winners my name was also called out and I received an award of excellence for my series People. To be really honest, I felt a bit emotional and overwhelmed. People has been an outpouring of my heart and soul and it feels very special that it’s publicly appreciated.

It was a very special night, connecting with other artists and their work. The real interests and sincere conversations were of great value. While walking back to my hotel I realized:  This was just my first day in Bologna… With a big smile on my face I started to look around for a nice Italian restaurant to celebrate Life!

Grazie Bologna e arrivederci!

Bologna... I am on my way!

Today is the big day. When I post this blog, I am en route to Bologna airport, Italy accompanied by my beautiful and sweet friend. We will attend the opening of the “Little Treasures” exhibition wherein four of my artworks are exhibited for two weeks.

Writing this blog, I remember clearly the process enfolding while taking a pause before I moved onto my last layers and finishing touch. For a few days my eyes and mind were only observing and absorbing possibilities. I knew I had to make a bold movement, so I took my grey’s and blacks to add more contrast. I kept on mixing and blending colors and reducing shapes. At some point in my process it feels I'm working in a flow, I absolutely love it when I enter this zone, I like to compare it with riding a wave. You just go with the flow. Likewise I can recognize flow I also know with certain assurance when my work is reaching the finish line. That beautiful sensation of taking a deep breath and to feel the satisfaction about the work that was brought into existence through my being.

And here they are, may I present to you this series: People

People by Annemarie Marcinek

Through abstract forms and vibrant colours, this series,  people, invites you to dive deeper into the process and desire for unification. Themes that are addressed are the need for revolution and celebration, but also the pain of exclusion and the longing for revelation.
My intention with People is to express a collection of thoughts, actions, emotions and desires of a collective. In search for unification and Life, what is needed to achieve that state of being. Every painting is titled individually: Exclusion, Revolution, Celebration and Revelation.

I hope you appreciate these works as much as I do and that you have enjoyed reading about my creative process for the exhibition in Bologna.

I am so looking forward to it! My “four” have arrived safely and undamaged at their destination. There they will be exhibited from November 25th to December 7th in the "Little Treasures" exhibition of Trevisan International Art, Bologna.

On Saturday, November 25th, 2017 I will leave for Bologna to be present at opening night and to meet the other artists from 40 different countries who also take part. That is awesome!

I can’t wait to reveal my "four" to you! While my first layers always focus on movement and give me a lot of direction in line and composition, it is the colors and shapes that come to life during the process and tell the actual story.

Early on I knew what my colors would be in this work. Fixed was a warm - cold contrast, of teal and warm orange/red. And a visual language that I would describe best as a drop/balloon-like shape. This form connects me with what I would best describe as a collective of thoughts, feelings, perhaps desires of people.

The pictures show the process how I play with color and shape in a loose way after my first layers of movement. And while I'm working on it, I think that every layer has its beauty and tries to convince you not to start a new layer. But inside you know when you have to continue when there is more. And that the process continues, even though there are sometimes days of pause in between to only observe and absorb.

I will write about the effect of this pause in my next blog with the final result of which I already reveal that the title of this series bears: "People".

To be continued…
